Project: Warehouse Door Enlargement (Light Commercial)

The Client’s Basement Needs

2 large doorways need enlarged for wide loads.

Our Solution

After securing this project, we contacted a local structural engineer to design the steel lintel we needed to carry the loads of the building. Once we received the stamped plans, we ordered the steel to be made and painted to spec. After the steel was finished, we then put in place shoring to hold the load bearing section of the wall above our work area. After the wall was properly shored up, we then used a wet cutting concrete saw to cut the outline of the area to be demoed. We then demoed out the area for the new steel lintel. The old lintel had to be removed, and then we set the new 18’-8” W16x36 beam. The beam was set on steel bearing plates grouted into the jambs of the new opening and welded down. After the beam was placed, the new concrete block was laid over the top of the new lintel. Then after the new concrete block was set up, we removed the shoring and patched the last few blocks. This project took our crew of journeymen masons 6 days to complete both doors.

Products We Used

  • W16x36 steel lintel with 12” plate welded on
  • 3×3 angle irons on the jambs
  • 7 gauge steel jamb covers
  • New 12” concrete block
